President's Corner

What a jammed agenda we have for the next month! Hold onto your hats!
Our October meeting will be include the election of the WBO board along with a great speaker.
We have several board positions we need to have filled: vice president, program chair-sponsors, secretary and special events coordinator. If any of these positions are of interest to you we'd LOVE to have you! Please e-mail me to let me know what catches your eye. My e- mail is mary@bakeshopweddingcakes.com. I can assure you that serving on the WBO board is fairly low time commitment, and very exciting and rewarding.

In October we also have our annual dinner. This dinner will prove to be extra special with a speaker guarenteed to inspire and impress. We also have special guests attending and a chance to see and be seen at the booth expo. What a great way to network. The first 70 guests who register for the dinner will also receive a free copy of the speaker's book! What a fantastic eveing this will be! Don't miss it.

Lastly, the fall wine tour will provide to be a fun and relaxing break from the everyday and an additional networking opportunity that can't be beat. Details of these events are included later in the newsletter. See you there!

    Asya's Raines

Strategies for Dealing with Difficult People

    Presented by Asya Raines
Banker, Economist, Author of Asya's Laws

Asya, as a child of the 1960s Soviet Union, not only tells a compelling story, but also distills her experiences into "laws" that make you smile and ponder.     Though much of her book deals with life, love, and disappointment her talk to WBO members dealt with dealing with difficult people as well as friends and business colleagues.

    • Always be in the process of building, maintaining, and keeping the relationships you have
    • In the case of conflict: use the weapons of Patience and Courtesy
    • Keep business savvy and respect as key ingredients in all business situations, especially with difficult people
    • Walk away when emotions are really strong; wait until you have control over yourself.
    • You need to maintain control and maintain self- esteem
    • If you want to change someone else, change yourself first

Asya read excerpts of her book, Asya's Laws: Lessons in Love Lost and Found. Asya's laws tell us not to ignore our instincts. Asya's laws tell us to listen to others and then do things our own way.

Along with Asya laws are pertinent quotes that illustrate her experiences on life, friendship and success, such as:

    Security is mostly a superstition....
Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.

    -- Helen Keller

Spread the Word – Mary Stevens, Life Cycles
    Mary Stevens

Life Cycles: Helping you and those you love with life’s changes

Remember how excited you were as a kid when your birthday was coming–or how you did the countdown to favorite holidays? There was the time of anticipation and planning, the event itself, then the “getting used to” such as giving away some of your old toys to make room for the new–and perhaps taking on new responsibilities as well. Life Cycles counsels, educates and honors that sequence of preparing for, experiencing, and adapting to change as we negotiate life’s stages throughout the life span. Life Cycles’ mission is to assist individuals, couples and families in moving through life’s predictable, and sudden, changes in as useful and meaningful manner as possible.

Mary Stevens, MSW, the founder of Life Cycles, is a clinical social worker with over 25 years of experience. She has created teaching and training programs over the course of her career and is firm in her belief (supported by research!) that the transition times in our lives are the times we are most receptive to healing old wounds and growing into our greater potential–though also those times we are most vulnerable to the stresses that the change creates. For example, a planned childbirth is an exciting and happy time in most couples’ lives. However, the joyful anticipation is often accompanied by concerns about being a good parent or loss of free time. Once the baby is born, the mother experiences unexpected emotional shifts and the marital relationship is challenged in ways beyond sleep deprivation. Most couples move through this period satisfactorily, but a significant percentage of couples seeking marital therapy point to this time as the beginning of their marital stress.

Life Cycles meets the needs of those in life transitions in a variety of ways. Counseling is provided on an individual, couple or family basis. Family meetings are particularly helpful when an elderly family member’s needs require increased family involvement. Premarital, parenting, even grandparenting workshops are available. Managing the early years of retirement groups are soon to be underway. Services to the elderly also include guardianship and care coordination. And, of course, ceremonies. Life Cycles’ staff is able to perform legal marriages–and to assist couples in creating their own personalized service. Ceremonies for the entire life cycle are available–from baby naming and home dedications to memorial services. For more information, please contact Mary at 734 794 9989 or www.lifecycles.biz
